“EVEN THE STRONGEST FALL”: THE FATE OF TITANIUM-COURTESY LDF

In the legislative assembly session of 27th February 2011, just days before the declaration of elections, LDF made a declaration to implement an 83 crore project for the maintenance and renovation of Travancore Titanium. Attempts to execute projects worth 225 crores and 414 crores were made by the LDF, both of which failed pathetically. No movement happened thereafter.

And as the elections approached, an 83 crore project was announced to cover up the issue that has been a major discussion for a long time.

The responsibility for the current crisis at Titanium is entirely a delay which was brought in initialising the waste removal process at the plant. Renovation of the plant was delayed along with it and LDF alone holds the responsibility of placing Titanium at the verge of a shutdown.

45 crores have been allotted to the new neutralisation plant. The amount has been allotted without any proper government order or facility for monitoring. A large scale corruption is on its way and LDF has launched dummies to play the corruption game for them.

Dr.A.D.Damodaran committee appointed by the LDF government in 1997 recommended the waste removal and plant renewal programs for Titanium. Corresponding to this, a 129 crore project in the first phase and 127 crore project in the 2nd phase was planned. Only the first phase project got the approval from the Central Environmental Department. The following UDF government took steps to initialise the first phase. It was the LDF government which came to power in 2006 that again reworked the suggestions of the committee and changed the suggested amount to 225 crores in the first phase and 189 crores in the second phase, making a total budget of 414 crores for the plant. Later after considering the limitations of the company the budget of the project was made to shrink to 83 crores. It’s surprising that LDF is blaming UDF for the failure in the execution of a project that had its entire movement during the LDF regime.
