The guidelines to be followed by NRIs for participating in the voting process for state assembly, Lok Sabha and Local body elections has now been announced by the Indian Government.

A Non Resident Indian can vote if they hold an Indian passport (to prove Indian citizenship) & have not acquired any other country’s citizenship and present physically in the country and constituency (with passport containing photographs and visa documents at the time of vote and registered with the Election Commission).

The law ministry had issued a statement according to which, every overseas voter, who is not otherwise disqualified for registration, has to be registered in the address mentioned in his passport and may make an application to the officer concerned directly or send it by post. While sending the applications by post, the applicant is expected to send their details and a photocopy of their passport containing photographs and visa documents. All these copies should be duly attested by a competent official of the Indian mission at their destination. If the requirements are not met, the applications will be rejected.
